Havering Cyclists

Harold Wood Ward faces challenges familiar across Havering, congestion, poor air quality, limited public transport options, and rising health concerns.  Cycling is not the whole answer, but it is a practical, affordable, and proven way to tackle all of these issues at once.

What makes cycling particularly valuable is that it doesn’t always require large budgets, often just a little planning and political will.  As Havering Cyclists (part of the London Cycling Campaign), we are not anti-car. Our aim is to make sure residents, especially young people, have safe alternatives.  At present, school children across Havering receive excellent cycle training, but once trained, they are left with very few safe places to ride. This is a wasted opportunity that could otherwise build healthier habits and reduces long-term pressure on our roads and health services.

The benefits are clear:

Health & Wellbeing

Ø  Improves fitness and reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Ø  Reduces stress, boosts mood, and improves mental clarity.

Accessibility & Community

Ø  Cycling is low-impact and suitable for all ages, from children to older residents.

Ø  It strengthens community connections through group rides and local initiatives.

Environment & Quality of Life

Ø  Fewer cars means less congestion and cleaner air – issues of particular concern in Harold Wood

Ø  It helps Havering play its part in tackling climate change and building a greener future.

At a time when climate change and public health are pressing concerns, supporting cycling is one of the simplest, most effective steps the Council can take
