Tax return scam alert

If you receive an email from the taxman asking you to create a ‘government gateway account’  and then your personal banking details or has the subject line”# Refund Payment Confirmation Number” followed by an 11-digit number you should delete them immediately as they are scams. HM Revenue & Customs will never ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email. The advice comes as January, the month for genuine tax returns deadlines, sees an increase in the scam emails being sent. If you receive an email you’re unsure about send it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk, or if it’s an SMS message forward it to 60599.
